SPECTATORS at the Polo Field on Chester Racecourse are quite accustomed to seeing four-legged players charging across the turf and sophisticated headgear in the stands on Ladies’ Day.
But on Sunday, February 28, the only competitors on the ground will be of the ‘three-legged’ variety, and their dress code for headgear will be ‘anything goes’, as they race for charity in a bid to win a world record and possibly pick up some celebrity support on the way.
In an attempt to gather together the most people ever to take part in a three-legged ‘hat-trick’ race, Dee-Votion Events is also hoping to raise thousands of pounds for children’s medical research through Sparks, to which all proceeds will be sent.
The current three-legged record stands at 346 pairs (692 participants.) Dee-votion hopes to smash this with a whopping 400 pairs (800 participants) and add a bit of variety and colour with each entrant wearing a hat.
All volunteers of all ages have to do to take part in 3 Leg It is go to the Pavilion Stand at the Racecourse on February 28 (gates are open at noon) to register – on a first come, first served basis. A free soft drink will be provided on arrival.
Andrew Johnston, one of the organisers from Dee-Votion Events, said: “The race will be run, walked or hopped over 200 metres with hats intact to the finish line and hopefully into the record books and participants aged eight to 80 are all welcome.
“As this event is taking place in February we want to make sure that everyone will be suitably dressed with lots of layers and practical footwear.
“As far as what they wear on their heads, whether it’s an early Easter bonnet or something the Mad Hatter would be proud of, we’re really looking forward to seeing a fashion parade.
“Despite the competitors having one leg fewer than is traditional at the Racecourse, it promises to be a memorable occasion for all, rounded off by a post-race award ceremony and fingers crossed the announcement that we have all succeeded in breaking the three legged record.
“To take part, whilst contributing to a very worthwhile cause, entry is only £5 per person, or £8 per pair and we are hoping to invite some celebrities to help out.”
