Vital work under way to preserve Chester’s historic city walls

AN EXTENSIVE programme to clear the vegetation from Chester’s city walls began in November.

The work, which is match funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council and English Heritage, will play a vital part in the preservation of this important scheduled ancient monument.

Several sections of the walls clear-up have been completed to date, and the team are set to begin work on the tower over looking the River Dee and adjacent to the Groves, which dates back to medieval times and stands some 50 feet high.

The clearing of the vegetation is being done using industrial roped access techniques. Euro Trees has been appointed by Cheshire West and Chester Council to undertake the works.

Simon Walton of Euro Trees, said: “It is an exhilarating experience using the ropes to enable us to move around the walls to remove the vegetation.

“I am extremely proud to be involved in this project, which will result in the walls being exposed for first time in 12 years.”
