£7 million scheme to improve water supplies in Cheshire gets under way this week

A £7 MILLION scheme to improve water supplies across Cheshire will soon be entering its next phase.

Engineers working on behalf of water company United Utilities have been busy since May last year laying a new pipeline which when completed will span 9.4km from Dunham through to Knutsford.

The new pipeline is made of plastic and will replace the current cast-iron pipeline which is coming towards the end of its useful life.

Ian Grzelak, United Utilities’ project manager, said: “The new pipeline will ensure that we are able to continue to supply high-quality drinking water to Knutsford, Mere, Rostherne and Millington for many more years to come.”

The scheme, which is expected to be ongoing until spring this year, is progressing well.

On Monday, February 1 engineers began working on Mereside Road for up to six weeks to install a section of the pipeline.

The road will remain open throughout the work but temporary traffic lights will be put in place.

“This six-week phase of work will be split into three phases,” said Ian.

“The first phase will see us working in the road outside Parkside Garage from February 1 to February 10.

“We will maintain access to the garage, which will remain open as normal.

“For the second phase we will be working in the road opposite the junction with Clamhunger Lane from February 10 to February 22.

“Clamhunger Lane will be open only for residential access from the Warrington Road end.

“The third phase will involve work from the junction of Clamhunger Lane to Mereheath Lane from February 22 to March 8.”

This scheme is part of United Utilities’ £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010.
