Waterworks on Watergate Street as pipe bursts
A BURST water pipe left businesses without running water after an accident during work on gas pipes.
Construction workers from Balfour Beatty accidentally broke a connection in the underground piping on Watergate Street at about 10.30am on Monday.
The workers, who are installing new gas pipes for the National Grid at the street’s junction with St Nicholas Mews, sent water spraying more than 10 metres into the air.
A ferrule – a hole linking the main pipe to a smaller pipe leading to a building – was inadvertently pulled out causing the fierce jets to shoot skywards.
Managing director of Dee Valley Water, Norman Holladay, said his inspectors were sent to the site to deal with the situation and isolate the impact.
