Controversial plans for Tarvin supermarket given green light by Planning Inspectorate

PLANS to build a supermarket in Tarvin have been given the green light after a successful appeal.

The plans, which include new residential buildings, shops, a restaurant and car parking, have split public opinion in Tarvin and surrounding areas with fierce opposition coming from various local groups and organisations.

The Planning Inspectorate granted permission to Osborne House after a hearing at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chester.

Inspector Harold Stephens decided that in addition to upholding Osborne House’s appeal, Cheshire West and Chester Council must now refund their appeal costs.

He said: “It is claimed the residents of Tarvin are adequately served with businesses already present and that the introduction of the proposed supermarket would undermine local businesses. I cannot agree with these assertions.

“Tarvin Parish Council, Tarvin Civic Trust and local traders object to the scheme as submitted but it is not the role of the planning system to restrict competition, preserve existing commercial interests or prevent innovation.”

He added CWaC was guilty of ‘unreasonable behaviour’ and that it had put the appellant to ‘unnecessary expense’.

Osborne House founder John Fifield told The Chronicle he would be willing to hold talks with concerned parties to discuss future building plans.

He said: “We are very pleased. I think it will be good for Tarvin. We are glad the inspector agreed with us and we are great believers in Tarvin.

“There have already been tremendous improvements in the village, particularly at the Red Lion, George and Dragon and the Gunnery.

“We will be in touch with the parish council. We want them on board.”
