Tom and Rita Fearon of Hoole celebrate diamond wedding anniversary

THIS week’s snow and ice brings back fond memories for a couple from Chester who got married on a snowy day 60 years ago.

Tom and Rita Fearon, of Greenbank Road in Hoole, had to wait for three years before they could eventually become a couple while Tom was serving in the Royal Air Force in Egypt, Cyprus and Palestine.

The couple eventually got married at St Werbergh’s Church, Chester.

The event was made very special by all their friends collecting sugar rations so they could have a wedding cake.

After the wedding, Tom and Rita celebrated with a honeymoon in Dublin.

During their long marriage Tom and Rita have enjoyed many hobbies together, including riding on Tom’s motorbike and performing in a magic act where Rita was Tom’s assistant.

They now have a big family of two daughters, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren – the youngest of whom was born last October.

Tom, who owned a newsagent’s on Grosvenor Road in Chester for 30 years, said: “The secret to a long lasting marriage is being tolerant with each other. Not one of you is the best.”
