ADOPTION has become the latest casualty of the recession.
According to Chester agency Adoption Matters Northwest, potential adopters, including some who have already signed up for preparation groups, are having second thoughts, with some withdrawing their interest altogether.
The agency reports that 10% of those enquiring about becoming adoptive parents over the last six months subsequently pulled out.
Some lost their jobs through redundancy and others decided to put their adoption plans on hold, fearful about their own job prospects and their finances.
“We completely understand people’s concerns but it’s still bad news for the 4,000 children across the UK waiting for the opportunity of a fresh start with a new family,” said chief executive Norman Goodwin.
The agency is hoping promotional activity during National Adoption Week last month will generate new enquiries and help make up the shortfall.
