Countess of Chester Hospital working flat out due to snow

THE Countess of Chester Hospital is working at full capacity largely due to people falling over in the icy conditions.

But a walk-in centre adjacent to accident & emergency is easing the pressure by dealing with people who turn up with non-urgent conditions.

Director of operations Tim Lynch said: “We are expecting more cold weather at a time when accident and emergency departments are already being challenged by the numbers of people falling and slipping over.

“We would strongly urge people to take extra care and especially if you are elderly. It you need shopping, please ask someone to do it for you or take extra care if you venture out.”

The Countess is praising staff for the way they are coping with the additional pressure caused by the adverse weather.

Mr Lynch added: “With the introduction of the new walk-in centre we have been able to divert a significant number of patients with minor conditions to a team of staff dedicated to dealing with these types of conditions. “However in these circumstances there is always additional pressure on A&E staff which should not be under-estimated. Their commitment and dedication has been excellent.”

The hospital has well-developed plans in place to meet any increase in demand over the winter months.

But members of the public are asked to do their best not to overburden the NHS at this time. NHS Direct, which can be contacted on 0845 4647, offers round-the-clock health information and advice. You can also visit the website at: www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk
