Ian Newton retires from St Thomas of Canterbury CE JUnior School after 21 years

AN MP, a sheriff and a lord mayor have joined children, parents and governors to celebrate a headteacher’s commitment to a city school.

Chester MP Christine Russell, Sheriff of Chester Hilary McNae and Lord Mayor of Chester John Ebo were all guests at the retirement of Ian Newton, headteacher of St Thomas of Canterbury Junior School.

Christine Russell was vice chairman of governors at the school in Walpole Street when Mr Newton was appointed head 21 years ago.

With 40 years experience in education Mr Newton has seen huge changes in the way the curriculum is delivered and school management.

He said “The children have been magnificent and never fail to impress with their achievements and their attitude.

“Behaviour is generally outstanding, with children treating one another with great respect. Parents do so much to help both practically and in raising additional funds for the school and the governing body has worked hard to achieve the best for all.”

Chairman of governors Fr Peter Walsh said: “Ian has been an outstanding headteacher. He will be sadly missed by colleagues and children.

“He has worked unstintingly to support our children and the local community which has enabled the school to flourish under his supportive leadership.”
