nBob Clough-Parker, secretary of Chester Business Club, said: “There is a general feeling within the business community that 2010 – and into 2011 – is going to be pretty tough.
“The increase in VAT, back to 17.5%, on January 1 is bound to have a detrimental effect and my own view is that, whichever party forms the next Government, it is likely to be raised to 20%.
“Overall, though, ‘Chester plc’ is well placed to take advantage of an economic resurgence – whenever it does come – but it looks as though the important retail sector is going to continue to struggle for some time to come.”
