Waverton couple celebrate diamond wedding anniversary
A COUPLE from Waverton are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.
John and Agnes Jones, of Guy Lane, first met at a social event at Brown Knowl in 1942 when John was 25 and Agnes was 29, but it was another seven years before they became a couple because of the Second World War.
Jokingly referring to himself as her toy boy, John said: “She chased me – and I’m so glad she did because she is so special.
“We have had a wonderful 60 years together and we have never had an argument – I prefer to say that we beg to differ!”
The couple put their longevity down to a shared love of ballroom dancing, and still have what it takes to cut a dash on the dancefloor today.
Among the cards and flowers filling their living room is a hand-signed card from the queen, congratulating them on their diamond milestone.
John, who worked for Manweb, and Agnes, who in her younger years worked on her parents’ smallholding in Malpas, have three children – one set of twins and a daughter – and five grandchildren, all of whom still live locally and helped them to celebrate at a family get-together at the Cheshire View in Christleton. Agnes is herself a twin, and her brother John was among the guests at the event.
Agnes, said: “We do everything together. We like growing our own vegetables, which we often end up giving away. He is a very kind man and would do anything to help anyone.”
Instead of asking for presents, John and Agnes asked for donations towards Tarporley Hospital and raised £600.
John added: “It was a wonderful way to celebrate. Even the weather was the same – it rained on our wedding day as well.”
With the weather worsening, Cheshire Police has published a short video for drivers. View it here Read
