HEDGEHOGS that can fit into a handbag are the new must-have unusual pet this Christmas.
Shoppers from as far as Scotland and Ipswich are travelling to Cheshire Waterlife, near Delamere, to get their hands on one the hugely popular African Pygmy Hedgehog.
The tiny creatures, measuring about five inches long and costing £250 each, have been previously marketed as designer pets perfect for women who want to carry them about in personal baggage.
But in response to negative customer feedback and animal charities expressing concerns, advertising campaigns have since been toned down.
Steve Birchall, owner of Cheshire Waterlife, at Blakemere Craft Centre, said: “Our business is based on respect for animals and we provide as much information as we can to prospective pet owners to ensure that they look after their animals properly.
“Although we understand the concerns expressed by some, we must remember that media hype sometimes can take over when an unusual pet becomes popular.
“Despite the tongue-in-cheek comments, most people realise that all pets, including African pygmy hedgehogs, are for life and deserve care.”
Leanne Plumtree, north regional press officer for the RSPCA, said that anyone purchasing a pygmy hedgehog should be aware of the specific needs of such unique animals.
She said: “Pygmy hedgehogs are undoubtedly very cute but animals aren’t accessories and promoting them as such is irresponsible.
“These are exotic animals whose needs are very difficult to meet in a household situation and where that’s the case, the RSPCA does not believe they should be kept.”
