Chester University women row their way to success in Northwich

CHESTER University women’s rowing crew took home medals from Northwich Head in their most successful race this season.

The intermediate three coxed four won their division followed by a win for the intermediate three pair.

The four competed against crews from Warrington, Kings School Chester and Liverpool Victoria beating their nearest rival by 30 seconds.

Women’s captain Gemma Walker said: “To win once is great but to win twice is unbelievable.”

This is the second win for the four in two weeks after coming first at Chester’s Dee Head a fortnight ago.

Miss Walker added: “We have a strong women’s crew this year, we train together six days a week and it looks like it’s paying off.”

The pair competed against Warrington RC the only other entry in the category and crossed the finish line 23 seconds in front.

Past captain Anna Blackstone said: “This is only the second time we have raced in a pair and we are really pleased to have won.”

“It is good to see that we are competitive as a club in the North West and hopefully this will be the start of a really good season for us.”

Both crews faced difficult weather conditions, with gale force wind and rain almost putting a stop to the competition.
