Chester police launch operation to tackle festive crime

POLICE in Chester have launched their Christmas crackdown on crime.

During the festive period officers will be clamping down on anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence.

As part of the operation they will be out in the evenings and at night targeting areas where trouble has been reported in the past.

Sergeant Anton Sullivan said: “Alcohol is often a factor in anti-social behaviour, particularly in young people.

“We will be working with off-licenses, pubs and clubs to ensure alcohol is not sold to underage drinkers or those buying alcohol for underage drinkers.

“I would also appeal to parents to make sure young people are not getting alcohol from home to take out and share with friends.”

The operation will be working under ArcAngel, the force’s partnership approach to tackling alcohol-related crime.

Any young people caught with alcohol will have it confiscated and anyone caught supplying alcohol to underage drinkers could face a fine.

Over the festive period, officers will also be concentrating on tackling the anti-social use of cars and other vehicles.

They will also be checking for insurance and whether the driver has a valid licence.

The town centre will see increased patrols during Christmas and New Year to deter pickpockets and thieves.

Inspector Richard Rees said: “When you are out and about doing last minute Christmas shopping or on a night out, it can be easy to forget about security.

“I would urge people to keep hold of their wallets and purses and not leave bags unzipped.”
