CHILDREN across Cheshire West and Chester will benefit from £1,474,272 of funding for one-to-one tuition in state schools announced by the Labour government this week.
Chester MP Christine Russell has welcomed the announcement of this extra funding, which will help to provide 10 hours of one-to-one tuition in English and maths for children at primary school and in the early years of secondary school who are falling behind in literacy and numeracy.
Mrs Russell said: “Literacy and numeracy are the cornerstones of education, and thanks to the hard work of teachers, teaching assistants and pupils, together with record government investment, more children in Chester are leaving primary school having mastered the “Three R’s” than ever before”
“In 1998, 69% of children in Cheshire achieved the expected level in English and 66% in maths. In Cheshire West and Chester 84% of primary school pupils now achieve the expected level in English and 82% in maths.
“However, I think we need to do more to ensure that every child makes good progress, and that those who are falling behind get extra help. This extra tuition will mean that thousands of children across Western Cheshire will get one-on-one help.”
