KIND-HEARTED villagers joined forces to raise money for those affected by last month’s floods.
Members of Tarporley Rotary Club gave away free roasted chestnuts at the village’s switching-on event and also at Saturday’s market.
They collected money to help members of the public who suffered during the shocking floods in Cumbria.
Publicity manager David Carter said: “There was a great turnout on both days, with people giving really generously.
“We collected about £400 in the two days which is really appreciated.
“It’s heartening that we get a response whether we are collecting for Tarporley charities, international disasters or national issues like this one.
“The spirit of Christmas is alive and well in Tarporley. We look forward to being back on the street giving away more nuts on Saturday, December 19.”
Last Friday night, residents of all ages gathered under the chestnut tree, in the centre of the village to sing carols, eat mince pies and drink mulled wine.
The lights were eventually turned on by Dr Sandy Campbell, who has lived and worked in the village all his life.
Dr Campbell worked at the doctor’s surgery and has treated several generations of Tarporley residents.
Before he turned the lights on he talked to the crowd about his time in the village and how it has changed during his lifetime.
Then, with the help of Father Christmas, and a count down by the crowd, he switched on the lights to brighten up the High Street.
The next meeting of Tarporley Parish Council will be held at the village’s community centre, next to the Spar garage, on Monday, December 14, at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.
