Cheshire motorists warned by police to carry out winter safety checks

MOTORISTS across West Cheshire are being reminded to stay safe on the roads this winter with the launch of a new initiative from Cheshire Police.

Roads policing officers from across Cheshire Constabulary’s Western Area will be carrying out routine checks on vehicles on the area’s roads as part of the operation which is running from now until Friday, January 7.

Officers will be checking vehicles’ tyres, windscreen wash levels, lights and looking for any defects which could put the safety of the driver and any passengers at risk.

Officers will also be on hand to offer safety advice to motorists travelling through the western roads and reminded them about the dangers of drink or drug driving.

Anyone caught using a vehicle illegally could have their vehicle seized or face prosecution.

Sgt Peter Hough said: “In the winter months, driving conditions vary greatly and it is important to make the roads as safe as possible by ensuring vehicles are well maintained and up to legal standards.

“This operation is first and foremost about keeping our roads safe this winter, officers do have the power to have vehicles taken off the road if they present an immediate danger to other road users.”

Police are urging motorists to carry out their own basic checks on their cars to avoid being caught short this winter.

Basic advice is:

Check and replace anti-freeze in your radiator,

Check all lights are working,

Check your windscreen wash levels and replace if necessary

Ensure your tyres are fit and legal for purpose

Make sure your windows are clear from any snow or ice and are fully demisted before moving off.

Ensure your windscreen wiper blades aren’t worn.
