WOMbat launches Chester store on Northgate Street

A NEW arrival in Chester city centre opened its doors on Saturday.

Adventure clothing store WOMbat has launched its first Chester outlet on Northgate Street.

Shoppers were entertained with live music and had the chance to win prizes such as Fairtrade goodies or gift vouchers if they popped a balloon in store.

Paddle boarder Rory Gurner took to the River Dee to mark the opening.

WOMbat was founded in 2004 as an online store specialising in casual outdoor clothing using Fairtrade garments where possible.

It has grown rapidly, opening five high street shops since 2008.

The Chester store is the latest one to open.

Store manager Mike Lyth said: “We’ve had a great response from shoppers in Chester to the new store.

“It’s been busy all weekend and we actually had to restock some items as we’d already sold out.

“We’re looking forward to a busy Christmas period and we’ll be having some festive activity in-store to help people have a bit of fun with their Christmas shopping.

“Northgate Street is a brilliant location for us and, with our unique combination of fun outdoor clothes and ethically sourced products, we’re confident that 2010 will be a great first year for WOMbat in Chester.”

WOMbat managing director Ian Milburn said: “We see Chester as a thriving city for retail at the moment, with many new stores opening in the city centre, bucking the national trend.

“It’s encouraging the city is continuing to attract quality retailers in difficult times.

“We’re bringing something that Chester shoppers might not have seen before.”
