Threapwood couple celebrate diamond wedding anniversary
A THREAPWOOD couple who were teenage sweethearts celebrated their diamond day with a family party.
Rosie, 78, and Gordon Starkey, 80, met when they were aged just 15 and 17 and married at the registry office at Overton-on-Dee on November 16, 1949.
The couple set up their own haulage company, GR Starkey, in Threapwood and worked together to build up a good reputation and a thriving business.
The pair had four children together – two girls and two boys – but they have sadly lost both sons.
Rosie said: “I have lived in Threapwood all my life, and been in this house for 50 years so have seen a lot change around me.”
Rosie said they had a party with friends and family to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary and particularly enjoyed all the cards and gifts they received.
Rosie said: “It was so nice to receive the card from the queen, and we had a lovely day.”
“Sixty years sounds like a long time but I can remember my wedding day very clearly. Our relationship has been about working together and give and take.”
