THE Solicitor General has praised the free legal guidance to the public, carried out by students and staff at Chester’s College of Law.
The Christleton-based college’s award-winning pro bono work involves providing legal advice to members of the local community, otherwise unable to afford it.
Vera Baird QC MP said in Parliament: “The College of Law at Chester has a long and proud history, and it is good that — to use a cruel metaphor — two birds are being killed with one stone: people get much-needed help, and at the same time the younger generation of lawyers start to understand the need for such work and the ethics of the profession into which they are moving.”
Schemes include a Legal Advice Centre, which provides help with a range of issues from family matters, neighbour disputes and consumer wrangles to employment problems and probate queries.
Another popular service is the Chester Employment Rights Advice Line (CHERAL) for any employee with an employment-related problem.
Last year The College of Law, Chester also launched pioneering service Contact 4 Kids to help family members struggling to maintain contact with children during family breakdowns.
