Indian rhino at Chester Zoo dies

INDIAN rhino Patna has died at Chester Zoo

The five-year-old had been at Chester Zoo for two years, arriving from Berlin Tierpark where he was born.

As a calf, Patna suffered a break to his front left leg and, despite the best efforts of both zoos, he continued to experience difficulties as a result of the injury.

Following advice from vets, the sad decision was taken to put him to sleep.

Kevin Buley, head of zoo programmes, said: “ It has been apparent for some time that Patna was still experiencing difficulties from the break to his leg received before he arrived at Chester.

“Despite the best efforts of all concerned, the damage to his leg was so severe that Patna’s continued growth only served to exacerbate the problem.

“Patna was an extremely charismatic animal – essentially a big softy – and all those who cared for him will miss him.”
