Vandals putting lives at risk by pulling up gas pipes in Chester

VANDALS are endangering their lives and the lives of residents by pulling up gas pipes.

The pipes were damaged sometime between 6.50pm and 7.30pm on Monday, November 9 in two homes in Blacon and one in Saughall and police are asking residents to be vigilant.

At one of the houses, a witness reported seeing two youths. One was wearing a white hoodie and the other was in dark clothing.

PCSO Mel Johnson said: “We have distributed leaflets and posters warning people of the dangers of damaging gas pipes and giving everyone the number to call if they smell gas or think they have a leak.

“This sort of criminal damage is very dangerous as it could cause gas leaks. I would encourage anyone who has information about who is damaging these pipes to contact the police immediately.”

The gas supply to all the houses was cut off while the pipes were repaired.

If you smell gas and suspect a leak, call the National Grid Helpline on 0800 111999.

To report a crime call 0845 4580000 or in an emergency dial 999.

Anyone who has information about the crimes is asked to call Cheshire police on the number above or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
