Army driver from Blacon is chosen for Queen's Guards

AN ARMY driver has been chosen to protect the Queen.

Royal Logistics Corps soldiers have picked up the mantle of guarding the Queen and Chester staff sergeant Philip High, 31, is among the select group.

He has served in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Iraq.

Troops from 22 Close Support Squadron, who normally provide logistic support in Gutersloh, Germany, took over the role on August 10 for four months.

Philip said: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that probably won’t come round again. It’s good to be carrying on a tradition that has been going on hundreds of years.”

Philip attended Blacon High School before joining the Army in 1995.

He is currently based in Germany with his wife Emma and their two children. Parents Michael and Marie live in Blacon.

During the four month tour of duty, the squadron will be responsible for protecting the Royal Family, national landmarks and heads of state, together with duties at Windsor Castle, Tower of London, and St James Palace.
