Chester sub aqua club’s Scottish dive trip

MEMBERS of Chester Sub Aqua Club visited the wreck of one of Oliver Cromwell’s ships in Scotland.

Twelve members dived to see the wreck of The Swan which sank in 1653 outside Duart Castle in the Sound of Mull.

The ship was one of a fleet of six vessels sent by Oliver Cromwell in 1653 to crush the Royalist uprising in Scotland. It sank during a violent storm and was not rediscovered until 1979.

Dave Parry, from the club, said: “It was a very interesting dive as we had a laminated map of the site which showed us the positions of the cannon and the large anchor.”

The team were based at the Lochaline Dive Centre.
