Tarvin pub the Red Lion relaunched as British Lions take on South Africa

A SOUTH African duo are hoping their new venture will be the best bar none.

Rugby fans Gerard Oliver and Len Verwoerd have taken charge of the Red Lion in Tarvin after it closed in January.

And, alongside business partner Mirka Hejtmankova, they are relaunching the popular village pub during the British Lions’ rugby test series against the South African Springboks.

Mr Oliver said: “The turnout last Saturday exceeded expectations and an even larger attendance of friendly supporters for both teams are expected for the second test on Saturday.

“We believe that a local pub is the centre of the community and that it has a responsibility to provide the best possible experience of service and atmosphere at all times.”

The new owners believe they will restore the pub to its former glory after local residents told them the pub used to be the best in Tarvin.

Customers can already take advantage of a 50-inch plasma TV, which will show all major sports events, being shown live on satellite TV.

There are also plans to launch the pub’s kitchen and menu within the next two months, after the owners have heard the all-important views of their regulars.

Co-owner Len said: “We have spent a lot of time listening to the comments and feedback from the people of Tarvin, as we believe the only way to run a successful establishment is to give people what they want rather than to dictate an idea of what we think they need.

“We have worked in a variety of businesses over the past 10 years, ranging from a Michelin star restaurant to traditional real ale pubs, and we look forward to the exciting challenge of building up the Red Lion to something that the Tarvin community can once again be proud of.”
