THOUSANDS of pounds were raised for charity at the sixth annual Chester Dragon Boat Race.
A total of 20 teams were spurred on by hundreds of people watching from the banks of the River Dee at Sandy Lane on Sunday.
Each team battled it out in timed heats before four finalists went head to head.
Chronicle-backed Charity Miles of Smiles team triumphed, posting the fastest time of the day.
Chairman Mick Hughes said: “After missing out on the finals by a tenth of a second last year the team were in very determined mood and after a slowish first heat got it together and looked unstoppable.
“It is a privilege to enter a team every year and this year we raised about £2,000 for the Miles of Smiles appeal.
“Lots of charities have benefited so it was a great day for all involved.”
Two teams of Chester youth volunteers took part, raising money for The Anthony Nolan Trust.
The ‘V involved’ Cheshire teams raised £50 to promote the youth volunteering opportunities for young people aged 16-25 living in the area.
Volunteers have the opportunity to earn ‘V’ awards by completing a set amount of hours volunteering.
They are provided with a certificate and a recognised award by employers, which gives them the chance to gain important skills whilst providing valuable experience.
