A HEALTH and safety instructor plans to climb three of Britain’s biggest mountains in 24 hours to raise money for Runcorn and Frodsham District Mencap.
Former Helsby High School pupil Andrew Angles, 39, of Nantwich, will be joined by 10 friends as he takes on the three peaks challenge climbing more than 11,000ft across England, Scotland and Wales.
He said: “It’s the first time I have done anything like this. I was sitting with the others in the pub having a chat and we got talking about it, the idea seemed better the more the evening went on.
“We are in training now. It’s been tough, I don’t think I have been this fit since I was in my early 20s but I am enjoying it. I have a lost about two and a half stone too, which is great.
“We started planning the event on November so it has taken about seven months to get to where we are now.”
The team will start their climb of Scotland’s Ben Nevis on Friday, July 3, at 7pm, and hope to be at the peak by 5am, then a short drive to Scafell Pike before heading to Wales to climb Snowdon, all in just 24 hours.
Andrew, who is married to Gill and has two children, owns a first aid training company based in Nantwich.
He said: “I have chosen to raise money for Mencap because my sister was mentally handicapped and went to the group an awful lot before she moved out of the area.
“Monday morning drop-in groups like this one are being shut down all over the place and this is the only on in the area open for these adults.
“It was set up about 40 years ago by a group of parents and continues to provide education, leisure and recreational services for children and adults with a learning disability.
“They provide support and respite for carers and families; offer information in line with latest policy and campaign on issues relating to learning disabilities.”
The group needs a computer, printer and photocopier and software to allow members to use the technology in a safe environment with appropriate support.
Extra funding would enable them to provide a variety of kitchen equipment so members could try simple recipes at home.
“The sessions would enable members to learn about healthy eating and improve and build up simple cooking skills,” he added.
Andrew is hoping to raise £1,000. To support him, visit www.justgiving.com/andrewangles.
