Roman Military Parade in Chester is hailed a success

THE sun shone as a military parade made its way to an historic shrine.

Standing in Edgar’s Field, Handbridge, the Roman shrine to Minerva is the last remaining rock cut shrine in its original location in Western Europe.

The parade marked the festival of the Roman goddess of soldiers, knowledge, wisdom and manual and technical skills.

In Britain she was invoked as an aquatic goddess with people placing an offering to provide protection during the crossing of the River Dee at the ford.

The celebrations, organised by Roman Tours, included dedications at the shrine, living history, dancers and ancient crafts.

There were also free activities at the Grosvenor Museum.
