Pupils with China in their hands

HARD work during the Year of the Ox could take students to China.

The teenagers, who are studying Chinese at Bishop Heber High in Malpas, have been taking part in a national Chinese competition organised by the British Council.

They have reached the final which will be held at the British Museum in London on February 26.

If the Malpas team is successful, they will have the opportunity to travel to China for a full week in April.

As part of the competition the team performed a short drama Welcome to Beijing.

The group is Rebecca Ralph, Steven Jones, both Year 8, Alison Davies, Andrew Jones, both Year 10, Kate Ashley, and Joseph Bellman, both Year 12.

An individual speech was presented by Joseph who has gone through to the final for the best advanced individual speech.

If he is successful, he will be known as the best non-native Chinese speaking pupil across ages 11–18 in the whole of the country.

The school marked Chinese New Year with students in Chinese lessons taking part in a range of activities.

For lunch, all students were able to sample a selection of Chinese meals.
