Guided tour of Mayor’s office
THE shoe was well and truly on the other foot when members of the Guild of Chester Tour Guides were on the receiving end of a guided tour of the Mansion House.
Chester’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Brian Bailey led the tour of the Georgian building in Abbey Square. The Lord Mayor usually works from the Lord Mayor's Parlour in the Town Hall, but during the current rennovatons of this building, he has relocated.
Mansion House, renamed by the current Lord Mayor as the formal name for a Lord Mayor's residence, was formerly known as The Retreat, run by the Order of Nuns of the Holy Name and the chapel, complete with stained glass windows, which can still be seen inside. In earlier times it was home to many notable people including the children’s author Charles Kingsley of The Water Babies fame.
History Hunter Guided Walks of Chester, lasting 90 minutes, depart from the Town Hall every day at 10.30am. Tickets cost £5 adults, £4 concessions and are purchased from the guide on the day. There is no need to book.
