Westminster Park’s BMX facility on track

BMX riders will soon be up to their tricks at a new track in Westminster Park.

The track, designed by Phil ‘Hudu’ Charnley, promises to be challenging for both novice and more experienced riders and is the first of its kind in Chester.

Work on the track begins in January 2009 as part of the park’s Phase two improvements and it should take 16 weeks to complete.

Other proposals include play facilities for juniors and teenagers, a new multi-use games area, footpaths, seats, bins, sculptures and planting.

City council landscape architects have been working with the University of Chester sculpture students to provide an art feature within the play scheme.

The design reflects the topography of Cheshire with earth mounds representing the Sandstone trail within the largely flat park symbolising the Cheshire plains.

A large twisting metal structure and other smaller structures will resemble Chester and its surrounding settlements.

The £170,000 project has been made possible thanks to funding from The Big Lottery Fund and WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental). WREN administers and distributes landfill credits on behalf of Waste Recycling Group Ltd.

Plans for the park’s improvement were drawn up with input from residents and children from nearby primary and secondary schools.
