Chester to host first city centre orienteering event

CHESTER will host its first ever city centre orienteering taster session with the aim of making it a regular event.

Orienteering is a sport that involves locating a series of controllers set around a course by using navigational and map reading skills. The aim is to identify the best routes from controller to controller with the task of completing the full course in the correct sequence with the quickest time.

The competitors have a special device toinsert into each controller identifying the time that they arrived, preventing anyone completing the course in the incorrect order.

For the first year the competition will only open only to members of the Deeside Orienteering Club which has organised it with support from Chester City Council.

The city will act as a giant orienteering course starting and finishing at Grosvenor Park and competitors will race around the streets finishing at Grosvenor Park.

The event highlights Chester’s versatility proving that it can host a range of activities that will bring people into the city. The Deeside club has a number of England representatives and recently received the award for junior club of the year at the Chester Sports awards.

The event is taking place on Sunday, October 12 starting at 9.30am and finishing around lunchtime, spectators are welcome.
