Increased security at OAP complex
HOMEOWNERS at a managed flat complex are celebrating improved security after a vulnerable 89-year-old had her TV stolen as she slept.
The Chronicle reported that the thief spent more than an hour and a half roaming the halls at Lincoln Court, Lower Robin Hood Lane, Helsby, before targeting the woman, who has dementia.
Following the break-in residents were left frightened so staff have increased security to ward off unwanted visitors.
Riverside Home Ownership service delivery officer Claire Tolen, who has implemented the scheme at Lincoln Court, said: “There have been a couple of burglaries that were well publicised and people were feeling worried and frightened. We didn’t want them to feel like that in their own homes so we have improved the security.
“We have added a security bar to the front entrance and a new door has been fitted on the ground floor. Everyone has been issued a UV pen so they can mark their property and we will be adding additional CCTV. There has been a big security push within the building too, everyone knows that their doors should be locked even if they are just going to do some laundry.
“We had a meeting with PCSO Chris Maddocks and they felt better and put them at ease. It should act as a deterrent so hopefully any thieves and unwanted visitors will stay away.”
There will also be an increased staff presence in the complex and any visitor who does not have ID will not be allowed entry.
Helsby PCSO Chris Maddocks added: “We were not responding to a particular problem but isolated incidents that can be prevented. We have taken steps to prevent any further problems by working with partner agencies to stop vulnerable people being burgles and feeling scared in their own homes.
“The markers allow us to return any stolen items to their owners so any invaluable personal items can be returned.”
