BELLA Italia has arrived in Chester, thanks to a new ice cream shop.

Antonina’s Gelateria in Northgate Street offers original Italian ice cream in a choice of 18 flavours, ranging from the traditional mint choc chip and strawberry to the more interesting Oreo flavour.

Owners Antonina Martin and Ray McBurney fell in love with Italian ice cream, known as gelato, on a recent trip to Rome and decided to learn how to make the real stuff.

“It’s made from milk, double cream and sugar and then we add these wonderful flavours which we import from Italy,” said Ray, whose background is in materials management.

His partner Antonina originates from the Ukraine and worked in the hospitality industry.

“We make the ice cream on site and also offer takeaway tubs,” added Ray.

As well as ice cream, the couple sell teas and coffees as well as smoothies and sundae desserts.

Prices for a single cone start at £1.45.
