Tributes to brave efforts of the land girls

HEROIC Land Army girls from Chester were honoured at a special ceremony and received their badges from MP Christine Russell.

The group of special ladies who all worked on the land to support the country during the Second World War were presented with their awards for recognition of their efforts.

Lord Mayor Brian Bailey and Lady Mayoress Raewyn Bailey hosted the event at Mansion House at Abbey Square which was also attended by friends, family and supporters.

The members of the Women’s Land Army honoured are: Irene Hughes, Irene Broom, Nellie Gerrard and Vera McLeod.

Three sing-along sessions of wartime hits, flag waving and refreshments completed the celebrations.

Lady Mayoress Bailey, who’s mother worked on the land in New Zealand and who’s father was a prisoner of war, said: “It was a wonderful day whereby we could celebrate the great achievements of our land girls.
