THEY’VE been having a cracking time at Kelsall Primary School.
A dozen eggs were delivered from Living Eggs along with an incubator and a brooder.
And headteacher Steve Williams says the youngsters have watched ‘in awe and wonder’ as 12 baby chicks hatched.
The school is involved with a project called Opportunity International, a UK microfinance company which helps the world’s poor people increase their incomes and provide for their families.
Steve explained: “The charity has published a children’s book called One Hen which tells the story of a boy from Ghana who uses one small loan to buy a hen which eventually transforms his family’s life and provides a livelihood for generations of villagers.
“Our Year 3 pupils have been looking closely at the story and Reception children have been looking at the chicks in their work on the life cycle.”
He added: “It’s been quite magical. It’s given the children first-hand experience and it’s been really special.
“Parents come into school with their children in the morning to see how the chicks are getting on and when the school is quiet all you can hear is this little chirping. We’re all amazed by it.”
