Secret smoker set fire to Chester neighbour’s fence

A SECRET smoker was found out when he accidentally set his neighbour’s fence on fire.

The elderly man was enjoying a sly cigarette outside his house in Chevron Close, Blacon, Chester, and threw away the butt in the garden.

But he was undone when the lit end set fire to the fencing belonging to his 91-year-old neighbour, a Second World War veteran who saw action in Burma and the Middle East.

Firefighters got the call at 3.07pm on Wednesday May 21, and removed the destroyed one-metre section of fencing.

Firefighter Jim Payne said: “He had been a secret smoker for some time, but it blew his secret.

“No harm was done but we gave him some advice.”
