Pupils triumph in regional final of consumer contest

A TEAM from Helsby High School has won the Northern final of the Young Consumers of the Year Competition.

Chris Simpson, Sarah Galley, Grant Goodband and Charlotte Beaumont took part as Cheshire champions after winning the county heat.

The competition helps young people to be aware of their responsibilities and rights as consumers and gives them essential life skills.

Cheshire County Council’s executive member for community and communications, Nora Dolphin, said: “Teams from across the North took part in the event which was staged in Manchester.

“They were all asked questions on a wide range of consumer-related topics such as food and drink, safety and the environment and consumer law.

“After a nail-biting final round, Helsby were crowned Northern winners and they booked their place at the national final.

“This will take place in Bournemouth in June and I hope to be there to give my support and wish them the very best of luck.”

Richard Evans, headteacher at Helsby High School said: “The students displayed outstanding knowledge of consumer issues for their age and competed enthusiastically against the other teams.

“The competition lasted until the very last minute when one of our students answered the final question correctly, sending Helsby into the final.”
