Blaze in patient’s bedroom at Chester hospital

FIRE crews were called to a Chester hospital on Monday (May 12) after a fire in a patient’s bedroom.

At 10.30am fire crews attended Bowmere Mental Health unit in Chester, to find a mattress well alight in one of the rooms. The ward had been evacuated.

Two fire appliances from Chester and one from Ellesmere Port attended the blaze.

Fire crews had to use breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

Crew manager Dave Doneo said: “The main problem was smoke logging. We had to send two members of the crew in with breathing apparatus to set up pressure ventilation fans to shift the smoke.”

A patient was arrested by police at the hospital.
