Chester City FC owner arrested after attending races

AN END of season celebration turned sour for Chester City FC owner Stephen Vaughan when he was arrested after attending the May Festival races with the first team squad and staff on Wednesday.

Mr Vaughan, 46, was charged with a public order offence, using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, and is to appear at Chester Magistrates Court on June 9.

He said: “I have got no comment to make. I was at the races, the incident happened and that’s the end of it.”

Manager Simon Davies and club owner Stephen Vaughan took the first team squad and members of the club’s staff to Chester Races yesterday.

Police spokesman Rachel Newton said: “We were called to reports of an ongoing incident on St Werburgh Street at about 7.34pm. Originally it was a report of an assault.

“A 46-year-old man from Heswall was arrested and later charged with a public order offence. He was bailed to appear in Chester Magistrates Court on June 9. We cannot confirm his name.”

Mr Vaughan resigned as chairman and director of the club before Christmas.

Club director Bob Gray said: “It has been an extremely tough season, and this was a gesture from Mr Vaughan to say thank you to everybody.”
