Racing certainty

CHILDREN of Ashton Hayes have been helping to raise money for charity by taking part in a sponsored ‘camel race’.

Bets of about 20p were put on the race and sponge dice were thrown to decide how far the camels would move.

The money raised for the Friends of Ashton Hayes Timebank charity is still being counted but project manager Susan Ross-Turner feels the event was successful.

She said: “This is the first event we have organised as a registered charity. We used children from Ashton Hayes to move the wooden camels which we borrowed from the village Scout group.

“There were 36 camels and six races overall. We had about 52 people all together and we had a buffet, it was a good day.”

She added: “We are hoping to hold it again in the summer so that the race can be outside.”

The charity holds various social groups, special events, a lending library and away days. There will be a coffee morning on Saturday, May 10, at Ashton Hayes Parish Rooms at 10.30am.
