£1.4m bid to revive Cheshire’s Iron Age

THE history of Cheshire’s forgotten iron age forts could spring to life thanks to a new Landscape Partnership Scheme.

Cheshire County Council officials have submitted a stage 2 application for a £1.4m grant to the Heritage Lottery Fund to enhance six forts along the ridge at Helsby, Woodhouse, Eddisbury, Kelsborrow, Beeston and Maiden CastleŠand their neighbouring habitats.

The three year scheme, if approved, will start in September and will further improve unique countryside areas along the Sandstone Ridge from Frodsham to Bickerton.

The Habitats and Hillforts Scheme has been broadly welcomed by neighbouring communities

and volunteers are encouraged to get involved.
