POLICE have closed a major access road into Chester following a serious fire in Bretton last night (Friday, April 25).
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to a report of a fire at Alans Skip Hire on the Broughton Industrial Estate, Bretton just before 10pm.
On arrival at the waste recycling plant the fire was well alight and officers were concerned due to problems in gaining access to the unit and also because of the acetylene cylinders in the building.
Six appliances attended, including the aerial platform and the environmental protection unit, and assistance was provided by British Aerospace.
A further two appliances also attended from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Fire officers are still at the scene damping down and people living nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
County Safety Manager Alun Edwards confirmed there are no chemicals present and that no-one has been injured during the incident.
“We are working with the owners of the unit and we will be conducting an investigation as to the cause of the fire as and when it is safe to do so,” he said.
The Environment Agency have evaluated the scene and say there does not appear to be any contamination as a result of the fire.
The A5104 Chester Road has been closed between the roundabout near Broughton Retail Park and the junction of the B5129 Saltney Ferry Road, and will remain so until further notice.
With the weather worsening, Cheshire Police has published a short video for drivers. View it here Read
