Team of bag snatchers at work in Chester

BAGS and purses are the latest items to be sought after by thieves in Chester.

Over recent months there has been a steady increase in the number of thefts in the city in which bags and purses have been targeted.

It is believed a team of thieves are operating in the system and using underhanded methods to con shoppers.

Inspector Mel Williams, of Chester Inner Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “The tactic being used is for one criminal, usually a woman, to drop change in front of the prospective victim.

“The offender then claims the money belongs to the victim and pretends to retrieve it. When the victim opens their purse or bag it is snatched by other culprits.”

He added: “Information we have received so far suggests the team of offenders are all middle aged women and we want all shoppers, visitors and residents to be on their guard when in the city centre.

“Ensure you always know where your purse is. Keep you bag closed and in sight at all times and watch out for any potential criminals using this method to carry out thefts.”

Police in Chester are also appealing for anyone with information about these thefts to contact them on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
