Vigilance call after spate of bicycle thefts

CYCLISTS should be on their guard and ensure their bikes are safely locked up following an increase in thefts of pedal cycles.

Over the past few weeks, there have been a number of incidents where cycles have been stolen because they’ve not been secured safely.

In the past week alone 13 pedal bikes, valued at more than £2,000 have been stolen from a variety of addresses in the city, prompting a new warning from Chester officers.

In many cases the bikes had been left unlocked, although some of them were in gardens or yards which were considered relatively inaccessible.

Two bikes, a GT Avalanche MBX and a Trek MBX were taken from rear yards in Panton Road on March 24.

And, a specialised MBX bike worth £600 was stolen from a property in Sealand Road the same week. It was stored in the garage which was forced open.

Police say that it is difficult to make a bike completely secure, but advise that following some simple crime prevention tips can deter all but the most persistent thieves:

Always lock your bicycle when leaving it unattended, even for short periods of time.

Use a good quality chain or bike lock and secure it to a suitable anchor spot, such as a bike stand.

When at home keep your bicycle in a secure place, like a locked garage, shed or in your house.
