Chester woman is the face of Costa Coffee’s new advertising campaign

A CHESTER woman is to see her photograph in hundreds of Costa Coffee stores around the region after being selected to star in its in-store advertising campaign.

Melissa Hopley, 20, was chosen from thousands of baristas in the UK because of her passion for coffee and her impressive achievements in the 18 months she has worked for the coffee chain.

After just two months of working at the Chester Retail Park store following her A-levels, she found herself promoted to barista maestro at Cheshire Oaks store. Nine months later, she was assistant manager. It was no wonder, then, that she was invited to take part in Costa’s Barista of the Year competition last autumn, where she demonstrated a superior coffee knowledge, technical skills, and flair for creativity.

“I enjoyed the area heat – I found it a really positive experience, despite being really nervous,” said Mellisa. “I was amazed when I won that, and even more so when I came second in the regional finals. Watching the international final was inspiring, although I was terrified for the person who competed against me. I don’t know that I’ll do it again; I want to train someone else to get up there now – I’ve already had my turn so now it’s time for someone else”.

The prospect of taking part in a photoshoot for the campaign was also daunting for Melissa.

She added: “It’s all been really exciting, but the thought of getting to London and having my photos taken were almost as nerve-wracking as the competition. But it’s been a great experience, and one that helps you develop as a person too – and having your hair and make-up done isn’t bad, either. I’m looking forward to the campaign launch and being recognised now”.

After her rapid rise, Melissa hopes to keep climbing up the career ladder. “I’ve moved stores and am getting used to the ways of the Cheshire Oaks store and establishing myself here. I eventually would like to get a new store and manage it, but the competition’s tough.

“It was definitely a good decision joining Costa after leaving school. I love it when it’s busy and I’m on the coffee machines and I’m making every drink right. It’s great serving the perfect drink and bringing a smile to someone’s face.”
