AN ARMY driver has been chosen to protect the Queen.
In a break from tradition, Royal Logistics Corps soldiers have picked up the mantle of guarding the Queen and Chester soldier Staff Sergeant Philip High, 31, is among the select group.
He is an army driver who has served in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and most recently Iraq.
Soldiers from 22 Close Support Squadron, who normally provide logistic support in Gutersloh, Germany, took over the Queens guard role on August 10 for four months.
The soldiers, whose trade backgrounds are as drivers and suppliers, trained for three and a half months before passing a Fit For Role ceremony with the Irish Guards Drill Team.
Philip said: "It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that probably won’t come round again. There is a lot of drill involved, but it’s good to be carrying on a tradition that has been going on hundreds of years."
