CHESTER Tories added to their successes at the Town Hall and on the new Cheshire West and Chester Council by snatching seats in a former Lib Dem stronghold.
The by election arose following the resignation of two Lib Dem councillors from Huntington parish council.
In a 33% turnout, Conservative candidates James Scargill and Paul Sheen won almost 60% of the vote.
Tory sources claim the parish was the Lib Dem's safest only last year.
The Lib Dem vote collapsed to such an extent that Labour beat them into second place.
Stephen Mosley, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Chester said: “Congratulations to Paul and James.
“They fought a good, clean and honest campaign that focused on what they would do to help improve their local area.”
He described the Labour and Lib Dem campaigns as “mean spirited and negative” and said residents had voted for a positive Conservative future for Huntington.
