Carers share their world through art and performance

YOUNG carers from Chester gave an evocative insight into their experiences during an exhibition of drama and art at Chester Cathedral.

Organised by the St John Ambulance Cheshire Young Carers, youngsters from across the region spent the past couple of months creating spectacular art installations and a drama production for the My Story exhibition.

Among those exhibiting their work was 17-year-old Kelly Marie Murray, from Great Sutton, who provides care to her disabled mother.

She said: “My responsibilities are to look after my mum, do the housework, and take her out.

“Since I have been a part of Young Carers, I have gained confidence and made friends. It takes stress off me and lets me take a break from home. While I am there, I can open myself up to the staff and talk to them about my problems.”

Young Carers assistant programme manager Lindsay Weaver said: “We have to stand back in awe of them. They’re ordinary children living in extraordinary circumstances, and are a true inspiration.”

The exhibition was created with the help of volunteers from the Young Carers and art students from the University of Chester. The event has allowed young carers to explore themes in their daily lives, not just as carers but also as young people. After the exhibition, there was a drama performance offering a thought-provoking portrayal of their day-to-day lives as carers.
