Susan Sutherland - Artist
HAVING a passion and talent for all sorts of art, recently retired Susan Sutherland hopes that the Virtual Gallery will provide her with opportunities and the dream to be a freelance artist.
The 67-year-old from Chester studied art in the sixties and spent a lot of her time travelling the world with her sea captain husband. Susan has worked in all kinds of occupations including 18 within social services - this led her to use creativity as therapy and has meant that she has developed skills and interest in a wide range of art forms.
"I really enjoy working with people, learning and sharing skills,” said Susan. “I like to design group projects - finding ways to get the most out of a simple idea and stretch it as far as one can. I prefer to work with limited materials as it forces creativity - having too much choice worries me!"
"I am really a designer at heart, although I can produce fine art and draw. I find it exciting to experiment with design and love to try out new things - be it digital, photography, 3D, crafts, costume etc.”
Susan added: " I originally trained in graphics, illustration and textiles and these have changed out of all recognition since the sixties when I was studying - anything is possible today, almost instantly!"
Currently, Susan has a great interest in Kusudama, a type of origami which originates from ancient Japanese culture using paper to create beautiful objects.
She said: "I have always been fascinated with Kaleidoscopes and this links in quite well with Kusudama. I enjoy working with pattern and colour and can evolve it into 3D with this art form.
“I cannot bear to throw away the wonderful wrapping paper available in shops now, so I have found a lovely way to re-use it! Recycle, recycle, recycle!"
